About the designer:
Carl Malmsten (1888 – 1972) was one of the leading figures of 20th century Swedish design, known for his advocacy of craftsmanship, Scandinavian tradition, and handwork over mass industrial production. Trained in Stockholm, he gained recognition in the 1920s after winning the competition to furnish the City Hall, establishing a warm and functional style based on natural materials and classical proportions. Throughout his career he collaborated with firms such as Nordiska Kompaniet and Svenskt Tenn, and also developed an important educational legacy by founding schools dedicated to preserving traditional crafts. His work deeply influenced the identity of Nordic design, noted for a timeless aesthetic that combined simplicity, comfort, and respect for Swedish craft traditions.
