Side table by Axel Larsson, Sweden, 1960’s
Ref. GA020090
Side table in teak wood designed by Axel Larsson for Bodafors, Sweden, 1960’s.
This small side table features an elegant, simple structure in a purely Mid-century style. Its design continues to refine modernist principles while incorporating more sophisticated elements: soft lines and gentle curves that bring back a sense of organic form. This is especially visible in the curved accents at the sides and in the subtle tapering of the legs, which gives the tray-like top a light, almost weightless appearance. The use of teak wood elevates the piece, allowing it to stand out and enhance any space.

About the designer:
Axel Larsson (1898 – 1975) was a prominent Swedish furniture designer and one of the key figures of 20th-century Scandinavian functionalism. Trained as a cabinetmaker and later at the Technical School in Stockholm, he developed much of his career as chief designer for the firm Bodafors, where he created furniture intended for public spaces such as cinemas, offices, ships, and institutional buildings, combining clean lines, structural durability, and a strong practical approach. His work reflects the transition from Nordic classicism to functional modernism, with particular attention to ergonomics and industrial production. Today his pieces are valued for their sobriety, durability, and for representing a fundamental stage in Swedish design prior to the international rise of mid-century Scandinavian modern.
