About the designer:
Bengt Åkerblom (1903–1995) was a Swedish physician and ergonomist who transformed school and domestic furniture design in the post-war period by applying scientific studies on posture and child development to chair design. In the 1940s, he developed the well-known Åkerblomstolen, conceived to encourage a more natural sitting position, with a slightly reclined backrest and a seat shaped to follow the body’s anatomy, in collaboration with the architect Gunnar Eklöf. His research had a strong influence on the standardization of school furniture in Sweden and helped establish the now widely accepted idea that design should be based on ergonomic principles, not only on aesthetics.
