About the designer:
Carl Malmsten was an influential 20th-century Swedish designer and cabinetmaker, known for his strong advocacy of traditional craftsmanship over industrial production. Born in 1888, he gained recognition after winning a competition to furnish Stockholm City Hall, which launched a career focused on warmth, functionality, and the use of natural materials. Deeply rooted in Scandinavian tradition, his style aimed to create durable, well-proportioned objects designed for everyday living, distancing itself from strict functionalism. Beyond his design work, Malmsten played a key role in craft education in Sweden, founding schools and promoting the value of high-quality handwork.
